TikTok Smart+ and the TikTok Ads MCP server vs Agent Planners

TL;DR

TikTok has moved on two fronts at once: Smart+ and GMV Max automate targeting, creative and bidding inside Ads Manager, and a TikTok Ads MCP server now lets external AI systems create, manage and analyse campaigns directly. That second one matters — it's the same commoditisation of the connect layer happening across the industry, and it changes what a third-party tool has to be worth.

Two different TikTok releases, often conflated

Smart+ additions include Auto Selection, Asset Manager and AI-generated campaign summaries. The MCP server is a separate thing entirely: infrastructure for agents, not an agent.

Smart+ is the delivery layer — leave it on

Smart+ operates autonomously inside its scope: it selects creative, varies it, picks placements and bids. It's free, native, and better positioned than an external tool to make per-impression calls. The same conclusion applies as with Advantage+ and AI Max — don't try to beat it, work above it.

The MCP server is the more interesting release

A native MCP server means anyone can point Claude or ChatGPT at their TikTok account and start asking questions — and, unlike Google's read-only server, this one is positioned for creating and managing campaigns too. That genuinely commoditises the connect layer, and it should change what you expect a paid tool to be worth.

The honest consequence: if all you want is to ask your assistant about TikTok performance, use the MCP server. It's free and it's from TikTok. The case for a harness has to rest on what a chat session structurally cannot do — which is covered in detail in Google Ads MCP vs Agent Planners, and applies identically here: no schedule, no memory between sessions, no governed write path, no cross-platform view, no rendered deliverable.

What still isn't covered by either

  • Cross-platform budget allocation — TikTok versus Meta versus Google on one definition of cost and result.
  • Margin truth — Smart+ optimises to your stated goal; whether that goal reflects real profit needs your COGS and settled revenue.
  • Unattended monitoring — a scheduled check that emails you, rather than a session you have to start.
  • Governance across a team — per-change approval, roles, and an audit trail of who approved what.
  • The budget-unit trap — TikTok expects major currency units while Meta expects minor ones. Anything running across both has to encode that once rather than trust whoever is prompting.

The honest recommendation

Run Smart+ for delivery. If you just want to query TikTok from your assistant, TikTok's own MCP server is the cheapest correct answer and we'd rather say so than pretend otherwise. Reach for a harness when the work spans platforms, has to run without you, or has to be explainable afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

What is TikTok Smart+?
TikTok's in-platform automation suite — the equivalent of Meta's Advantage+ or Google's Performance Max. It automates targeting, creative variations, placements and bidding, with recent additions including Auto Selection, Asset Manager and AI-generated campaign summaries.
Does TikTok have an MCP server?
Yes — TikTok launched an Ads MCP server letting external AI systems connect directly to the advertising platform to create, manage, optimise and analyse campaigns without operating through Ads Manager manually.
If TikTok has its own MCP server, why use a third-party tool?
For asking questions, you may not need one — the native server is free and correct for that. A harness earns its place on what a chat session can't do: run on a schedule, remember your rules between sessions, gate writes behind approval, compare TikTok against your other channels, and produce a deliverable someone else can read.
Are TikTok budgets in the same units as Meta's?
No — TikTok's API expects major currency units while Meta's expects minor units (cents). Any tool operating across both has to encode that difference once, since getting it wrong is a 100x error.
