Reddit Ads MCP server: community reports and paused builds from Claude or Codex
Reddit Ads has a public API but, as of September 2026, no official MCP server — the options are community wrappers you run locally or a hosted server like this one. This guide covers the configuration, what a person must approve, and the Reddit API rules that only a live account reveals.
What already exists for this platform
Reddit publishes the Ads API v3 but had not shipped an official MCP server at the time of writing (September 2026). What exists is community-built: open-source servers run as a local process with your own Reddit developer app, some reporting-only and some with write tools.
- No official server, and no hosted endpoint from Reddit.
- Your own developer app. A local wrapper needs a Reddit app, its secret and an OAuth grant with the Ads scopes —
adsreadfor reporting, adseditfor changes. - One login reaches many ad accounts. A Reddit user with roles in several businesses sees all of their ad accounts, and a campaign, ad group or ad id does not say which account it belongs to. That is the part a thin wrapper gets wrong.
What a full MCP server adds
| Typical option today | Agent Planners MCP | |
|---|---|---|
| Reddit Ads tools | Community wrappers, varying | 30 reads, 31 writes |
| Reporting | Usually | Breakdowns by community, interest, keyword, country, placement and device, plus the account's change log |
| Creates | Rare | Campaigns, ad groups and ads — always created paused |
| Account binding | Your own discipline | Every write reads its target first and refuses one outside the selected ad account |
| Archive, delete, public posts | Whatever the wrapper does | Held for a person on every key mode |
| Other platforms in the same session | No | 28 more platforms on one endpoint |
insights and get_insights, are aliases of report, and the MCP catalogue lists each tool once — so tools/list offers 59 Reddit Ads tools of the 1012 on the endpoint (a key that lists its tools on demand reaches the same ones with search_tools and call_tool). A key only sees the writes if it carries tools:write. How to configure it
- 1Create a key in API & MCP.
tools:readfor reporting; addtools:writefor changes. Tools mode needs a paid plan and fails closed. - 2Connect Reddit Ads under Integrations, signing in with a Reddit account that has a role in your Reddit Ads business. The grant asks for
adsreadandadsedit, plusadsconversionsonly where the Conversions API has been enabled — and the MCP key never carries Reddit credentials. - 3Add the server to Claude Code, Claude Desktop or Codex with the snippet below.
- 4Run
describe_permissions, thenlist_accountsfor the ad account ids (they starta2_), and scope every call with one.
claude mcp add --transport http agentplanners https://www.agentplanners.com/api/mcp \
--header "Authorization: Bearer ap_live_…"~/.codex/config.toml, with the key in an environment variable rather than the file: [mcp_servers.agentplanners] / url = "…/api/mcp" / bearer_token_env_var = "AGENTPLANNERS_API_KEY".What waits for a person, whatever the key allows
A tools:write key's writes either run inside the organization's autonomy guardrails or queue for an admin, depending on how the key was minted. One class never runs on the key's say-so: it is held in the approval queue, an accountable admin or editor is emailed, and it is decided on its own — never inside a bulk approval.
- Archiving a campaign, ad group or ad. Reddit documents no way to un-archive.
- Deleting a campaign, ad group, ad, saved audience, custom audience or creative asset. A campaign, ad group or ad must have been archived for three hours first; the tool checks that from a fresh read and says when the delete becomes possible.
- Creating a post. The post an ad promotes is public on the brand's profile, and the Ads API cannot delete it.
- A live Conversions API send. Test mode, the default, is not processed; a live event feeds attribution and bidding and cannot be taken back.
reddit_ads__mutate gateway, none of which reads the object first — those statuses travel only through the dedicated tools above. No raw_request tool — the typed gateways instead
Several families on this endpoint also offer a <family>__raw_request passthrough to keys with tools:raw; there is no reddit_ads__raw_request, deliberately. reddit_ads__get reads any allowlisted Ads API v3 path and reddit_ads__mutate writes the rest of the write allowlist by parameter, and both prove that every id in the path belongs to the selected ad account before Reddit is called — the binding a raw passthrough would not have, because a Reddit entity id does not say which ad account it lands in.
Five Reddit API rules measured on a live account
- Timestamps take
+00:00, notZ. A write body carrying2026-09-24T10:00:00Zis a 400; the same instant written2026-09-24T10:00:00+00:00is accepted. - Money is microcurrency on the wire. Budgets and bids are millionths of the account currency in the API; the tools take and return major units (25 means 25.00) and convert once, at the boundary.
- A new ad group needs a pixel. Since 13 July 2026 an ad group — and a campaign under campaign budget optimization — requires a conversion pixel id, so list the account's pixels first.
- At most three report breakdowns, and only one of community, interest, keyword or language at a time. A wide question has to become several small reports.
- Delete is two steps, three hours apart. Archive first; Reddit refuses a delete until the object has been archived and left unchanged for three hours.
Use cases
- Communities that spent without converting — a community breakdown on key conversions, the question Reddit's own interface makes slow to answer.
- Reddit against Meta and Google on one definition of cost per result, in one session on one key.
- Paused-first builds — campaign, ad group and ad built on an existing post, nothing delivering until a person activates it.
- Change-log forensics — who moved a budget, bid or targeting, and when, read from the account's own history.
Frequently asked questions
- Is there an official Reddit Ads MCP server?
- Not at the time of writing (September 2026). Reddit publishes the Ads API v3; the MCP servers that exist are community projects you run locally with your own Reddit developer app.
- Can an agent archive or delete Reddit Ads campaigns over MCP?
- Only with a person's approval, every time. Archive and delete calls are held in the approval queue whatever the key's write mode, never part of a bulk approval, and a delete needs the object archived for three hours first.
- Why does a Reddit Ads write return 400 on a date?
- Most often the time format. Reddit's write bodies accept a +00:00 offset and refuse the Z suffix for the same instant.
- What does a Reddit Ads MCP key need?
- A key with tools:read — and tools:write for changes — on a paid plan, and a Reddit Ads connection made under Integrations with a Reddit login that has a role in your ads business. The key itself never carries Reddit credentials.
