Running ChatGPT Ads with an AI agent: reports, reviews and paused builds
TL;DR
ChatGPT Ads is a new channel with a new API. An AI agent helps with reporting, review status, account health and paused builds, while spending starts only when a person decides it should. This guide shows how to set it up and what to ask.
1. Connect with an API key
- 1In ChatGPT Ads Manager, open Settings → API keys and create a key for your ad account. Each key reaches one ad account.
- 2Paste it on the ChatGPT Ads card in Integrations. It is checked with OpenAI before it is saved and stored encrypted.
- 3Ask in plain words: "How did our ChatGPT campaigns do last week?" or "Which of our ChatGPT ads are still in review, and why?"
2. Reports in the account's own terms
- Days in the account's time zone, money in its currency — whole units, never micro units to divide.
- By account, campaign, ad group or ad, daily, hourly or monthly; conversion events and sales come from a separate conversions read.
- Review status matters on a new channel: an ad in review or rejected does not serve, and the agent names the reason the review gave.
3. Health before creative
When nothing delivers, check the account first. One health read reports the account status and reviews, active campaigns with no active ad group or ad, ads in review or rejected, and a missing payment method — the usual reasons a new ChatGPT Ads account stays quiet.
4. Build paused, decide when spend starts
- Paused by construction: campaigns, ad groups and chat-card ads are created paused.
- Budgets with a floor: OpenAI refused daily budgets below $25 on our test account, so plan for at least that.
- You decide when spend starts: turning anything on always waits for a person, whatever the approval setting. By default every other change waits for your approval too; auto-approve is opt-in.
- Audiences carefully: emails and phone numbers are hashed on our server before they are sent, and adding or removing members always waits for a person.
5. What it will not do
- Delete: the Ads API has no delete; the agent pauses. Archiving cannot be undone, so it waits for a person.
- Spend without you: see step 4.
